Types of Catheters
Intermittent Catheters
With Intermittent catheterization, the patient inserts the catheter through their urethra into the bladder to drain urine several times a day. Leaving urine in your bladder for a long time can lead to a distended bladder or a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI). Intermittent catheterization may help reduce these potential problems.
Straight Catheters
Straight catheters are part of intermittent catheterization. Straight catheters are designed for patients with chronic bladder problems who cannot naturally empty their bladder. Men and women can use straight tip catheters in their own homes without the assistance of a medical professional.
Coudé Catheters
A coudé catheter is a urinary catheter with a slightly curved tip designed for easy insertion. The curved tip is used to navigate obstacles like enlarged prostate, urethral strictures, or scar tissue. More commonly used in men, coudé catheters can be used in women when they develop obstructions that require a catheter of a curved design.
Closed Kit System Catheters
A closed system catheter is a self-contained pre-lubricated catheter housed within its own collection bag. The sterile collection bag eliminates the need to void the urine into a receptacle or toilet. Closed Kit System Catheters reduce the risk of infection and contamination.
Female External Catheters
A pouch-type female external collection device is a plastic pouch attached to the peri-urethral area with adhesive and connected to a urinary drainage bag. Medicare and most private insurance cover (1) Female External Catheter per day.
Indwelling Catheters
Indwelling catheters are also called internal or “foley” catheters. The indwelling catheter design is similar to intermittent catheters; however, an inflatable balloon anchors the catheter in the bladder for long periods. Indwelling catheters remain in the bladder for 3-4 weeks, depending on a physician’s instructions and indicated care plan.
